B-Line Facts

  • Hamilton’s B-Line is identified as a “Top 15 Priority Project” in the Metrolinx Transportation Plan known as “The Big Move”.
  • Metrolinx (Provincial Agency) completed a Benefits Case Analysis (BCA) which demonstrated full LRT along the B-Line as preferred option that would generate net benefits for Hamilton while accommodating long-term travel demand growth in the corridor.
  • A $3 million Planning, Design and Engineering (PDE) study was initiated in March 2010 and completed in the fall of 2011. Fully funded by Metrolinx, the study produced the preliminary design (30%) for the B-Line and a feasibility study for the A-Line (Waterfront to Airport).
  • The B-line is 14km long with 18 stops planned from end to end
  • LRT vehicles will run up to every 4 minutes in busy periods, less frequently at other times, with intervals of no more than 10 minutes in quiet periods such as early mornings and late evenings.
  • Services will run from about 5:30am through to 1:30am but will finish earlier on Sundays.
  • The B-Line will need a fleet of about 20 LRT vehicles with 17 operating in peak times.
  • Fare levels have not yet been determined but it is expected that B-Line LRT fares will be the same as or similar to existing transit fares.
  • McMaster to Downtown journey time will be about 11 minutes.
  • Downtown to Eastgate Square journey time will be about 20 minutes.
  • McMaster through to Eastgate Square will take about 31 minutes.
  • In addition, an Environmental Project Report was completed for B-Line LRT at which time the Ontario Ministry of the Environment advised the City of Hamilton (Dec 22 2011) to proceed to issue a Statement of Completion.
  •  Metrolinx has asked the City of Hamilton to complete the 2012 Work Plan including a location for the Maintenance Storage Facility; B-Line Phasing Strategy; Electromagnetic Field and Vibration Study; and a financial project analysis complete with costs, benefits and financing strategy
  • The completed work will move Hamilton a step closer to a “maximum state of implementation readiness” for LRT on the B-Line.
